how a child of the 80s wears neon.

(maxi dress: Kohls, sandals: [old] Target, belt: Old Navy, bracelet: Target)

Neon is back in a big way.

And while my eight-year-old self got super pumped about it, my thirty-year-old self had some restraint.  I read (heard? dreamed? made up?) somewhere that if you were alive for the first time the trend came, you shouldn’t be doing it the same way when it comes back around.  Summary: you’re probably too old for it the second go-round.

I agree.  Sort of.

This is my neon.

A black maxi (that I’ve had in my closet for over a month and not worn.  I can’t believe I waited so long, but more on that travesty tomorrow.) with a pop of bright yellow skinny belt and a colorful bracelet.  That’s all she wrote, folks.  Anything more and it seems too much.

This trend got me thinking about my neon pink spandex bike shorts with black and white checkered side panels that my eight-year-old self wore with my Mickey and Minnie biking shirt (catch that theme?  I was all about a good theme outfit as a child.).  And if I was feeling extra sassy, I’d throw on a t-shirt clip and toss my hair up in a banana clip.  What can I say?  I was the epitome of second grade cool.

It’s pretty much gone downhill from there.

You look beautiful Mary! You are doing a great job getting fit and healthy! I just may whip out the bike shorts and banana clip. Maybe Steve can carry a boom box around whilst wearing a trench coat. I must go plan….

I loved biker shorts in the 80s. I stole every pair my brother had, and wore them with an oversized t-shirt, and of course the t-shirt clip. My favorite accessory!
You look great in the black maxi. I have one too, and it’s my favorite, year round!
