Today I’m starting my seventh year of teaching.
I’m exactly 20 pounds lighter than I was when school ended last year. And I picked up a tan this summer.
I became the language arts department head a couple weeks ago so that’s another layer of responsibility. In other words, more stress.
Also adding to my business card: 8th grade basketball coach. Except, I don’t have business cards. I used to coach volleyball but my heart wasn’t really in it (also, I didn’t know what I was doing…), but basketball–that’s something I know how to do. I’m excited.
This year is also bittersweet as two of my favorite teachers have left for bigger and better things. Good for them, but I selfishly want them here with me as I start another school year. Holtzclaw and Broling: don’t forget us now that you’re at the big house. And best of luck!
Remember those butterflies you used to get in your stomach on the first day of school? I still get those every year. I like the feeling of the unknown. It keeps me on my toes. I think when the first-day butterflies aren’t there, then it will be time to move onto something else. It’ll be a sign.
Until then, here’s to first days and the smell of new books.
Sounds like you have been really accomplished this summer! Way to go!
