weekend read: Dark Places

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Gillian Flynn is messed up.

And I love her.

Flynn (of Gone Girl fame) writes the most twisted books. They’re dark and ugly, real and addicting. I can’t get enough of her.

In Dark Places, Flynn tells the story of a girl, Lilly, who has grown up in the shadow of her dead family. When she was younger, she miraculously survived a brutal attack on her family that left her mother and two sisters dead. And her brother, a rumored Satan worshipper, is eventually convicted of their murders.

Lilly grows up living with the scars and demons of that night and hasn’t really ever recovered. Also, she’s broke.

So when a group of fans of the murders contact her and offer to pay her to come and speak at their meeting, she hesitantly agrees. And while there she learns that she, and not her brother, is hated by most of the group. Because no one there actually believes he did it.

And what starts as a way to make some cash, ends up taking Lilly back to her childhood and reliving all the things she has tried so desperately to forget.

And what she learns will turn everything upside down.

Dark Placesby Gillian Flynn is the perfect summer read. You’ll stay up late trying to figure out what really happened, who is to blame, and learn that, ultimately, no one is blameless.
