I know this is the summer of John Green and The Fault in Our Stars, but since I’ve been there and done that years ago (I wrote about it here in February 2012), I’ve been slowly working my way through all his other books. I was on a John Green kick for a while (see: Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines), but burnt out until my book club selected Paper Towns
Paper Towns by John Green is just as smart and entertaining as his other young adult books. The main character, Quentin, is another dorky version of Green: lovable, smart, and not good with girls. But when Q’s neighbor/forever-crush goes missing again, he takes it upon himself to find her. Because as mysterious and private as Margo Roth Spiegelman is, he can’t quite let her go.
So we follow the main character and his friends (that I like even more than Quentin; Green has such a great way with characters) as they try to follow the clues Margo left. And even when they keep hitting dead ends, Q can’t give up the search for this girl. He’s convinced that she wants him to find her and he won’t stop until he does. He’s driven by love and that fearless luck all teenagers possess as he travels the state and eventually the country looking for Margo in hopes of bringing her home with him so they can spend their last summer before college together. But as a reader, you know that can’t happen. Q doesn’t know this though and his concern for her only strengthens as time passes.
Paper Towns by John Green is another good YA novel (though like most of Green’s books, these would be young adults on the older side). The more I read of Green, the more all of his books start to feel similar. The main characters are all dorky, but lovable teenagers who feel like outsiders but somehow form all these powerful and life-changing relationships. But I’m not bored with that storyline yet so I’m sure most other people aren’t either.
Have you read any John Green books before? I’m sure you’ve read The Fault in Our Stars…have you tried his other books yet?
