It was probably a blessing in disguise that I didn’t get to see Ellie get on the school bus for her first day of kindergarten. I would have cried and made her more nervous than necessary. But it still stinks to know that as long as I’m a teacher, I’ll never see her get on the bus for her first day of school. Waa-waah.
So while I can’t be there to kiss and embarrass her in front of her friends (although we’re not at the point where she cares if there is public affection, thank goodness), it makes me less anxious to know that we’ve packed her a nutritious lunch while she’s away.
Because I see what some kids eat for lunch every day and it’s not pretty, folks.
Letting Ellie help me pick out her lunch-box food while we’re at our local Walmart Super Center is leading to some great conversations about making healthy food choices and why our bodies need good food to make them work their best. So packing Del Monte’s Fruit Cups and Fruit Burst Squeezers pleases both a picky five year old and her even pickier mother.
I get as much food prep done as I can on Sundays so Ellie can just pick a few items out of a plastic container we keep in the pantry and her lunch is practically made (Chris will make her a sandwich–normally peanut butter and jelly–in the morning before school). She always has to have a fruit and a vegetable (Mom’s rule) and then she gets to pick crackers or pretzels and a little dessert like a granola bar, fruit snacks, or animal crackers. She bragged after the first day of school that because no one was there to tell her what to eat first, she ate the fruit snacks before anything else.
That sounds exactly like something I would have done. WHEN DID SHE GET SO SMART?
I’m not over her being big enough for kindergarten yet. She’s coming home talking about friends and gym class and how fun riding the bus is while I’m trying to rock her to sleep and wipe her face off with my spit-covered thumb. How did we get here already? Especially since I’m only twenty two years old…
While I’m still coming to terms with how old my babies are (and my real age, apparently), I can at least feel confident that Ellie’s getting healthy food that she enjoys while she’s away at school learning how to take over the world.
Make sure you take advantage of the promotion going on at select Walmart Super Centers: upload a favorite back-to-school photo to the photo center and they’ll print it for free with a back-to-school border. In addition to the free print, they’ll give you a $1 off coupon good when you buy two Del Monte Fruit Cups or Fruit Burst Squeezers. This offer is good from August 1-September 13, while supplies last.
Here’s the picture we had printed: Ellie waiting for the bus on her first day of school rockin’ her animal print shades and doggie dress. She was the coolest kindergartener on the block.
