weekend read: The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook

I normally review fiction novels with occasionally breaks for some non-fiction, but today I want to share a cookbook with you because it sums up everything I love about life: writing, reading, and eating.

How can you go wrong with that trifecta of goodness?

The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook edited by Kate White

The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook edited by Kate White is as much fun to read as any novel plus it has amazing recipes. This book understands the power of a good novel to make you crave food or dream about what the characters are eating. Recently I was reading a book that kept mentioning hot cross buns. Three different characters were eating the buttery hot cross buns and by the end of the book, I couldn’t stop thinking about those dang hot cross buns.

Books are powerful like that. So when a bunch of my favorite authors come together and share their famous recipes from books they’ve written (what characters eat or what was served at a party in their book, for example) or their favorite family recipes, I am intrigued. And also hungry.

I’m on vacation this week and actually packed this cookbook so I could try a few recipes while we’re gone. I know that cooking on vacation sounds horrible to some of you, but being in someone else’s kitchen in a new city and making breakfast or a late lunch because we have no schedule and no where to be just sounds like heaven to me.

What I’m going to try this week:
Richard Castle’s Morning-After Hotcakes
Margaret Maron’s Granny Knott’s Baked Toast (this sits overnight which is awesome for vacation breakfast!)
Bill Fitzhugh’s Spicy Beans
C. Hope Clark’s Spicy Crock-Pot Pork (This will be in the slow cooker when we return from vacation when I have to feed my family but don’t want to cook because I’m back to real life.)

I’m also really interested in Sue Grafton’s peanut butter and pickle sandwich that her character Kinsey Millhouse eats. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to try it though.

The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook edited by Kate White would make a great addition to any avid reader’s kitchen or a great gift for the foodie in your life. The stories that start each recipe are entertaining by themselves even if you’re not a big cook. Plus, I’ve found a couple new authors to check out through this cookbook. I’m telling you, you’re gonna like this one.

Just for the record, peanut butter and dill pickle is granny’s 2nd favorite way to eat peanut butter, after peanut butter and tomato. She does not like peanut butter with sweet things.

I can’t believe this is the first I’ve heard of this. I need to process this for a while…
