weekend read: Free-Range Kids

Have you heard about the free range movement? If you have, it’s probably been in the context of the news and in a negative light. But I’ve been intrigued and when my friend Jessi mentioned Free-Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy, I knew I wanted to read it.

The free-range movement is basically about giving kids back the freedom and confidence to be kids with less helicopter parenting and more self-reliance. Things that I want for my daughters.

Free-Range Parenting by Lenore Skenazy

I loved reading this book. And I would love if you’re a parent or a soon-to-be parent, that you read this book too. There are different levels of free-ranging and the book shares ideas for the beginner or the seasoned parent. Raising self-reliant, smart kids starts early and is a never-ending task. So it’s not about being a hands-off parent, but it’s about raising kids that are aware of their surrounding, know how to handle themselves, and make wise decisions.

What parent doesn’t want that?

Skenazy is sarcastic and smart, a writer that I enjoyed reading for many different reasons. She writes with humor as she talks about all the ways our media seems out to scare parents as opposed to help them, how much safer our world is now than when I was growing up (seriously, have you seen the crime rates from the late ’80s and early 90s? What the heck.), and why telling our kids to not go with strangers rather than don’t talk to strangers makes more sense.

I loved reading this book (did I say that already?). Free-Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy is relate-able, fun, and thought-provoking. I also liked that she makes sure readers know that there are lots of ways to be a free-range parent and you pick the parts that are best for your family and your children. It’s made me rethink some of my parenting no’s and transformed the way I ran our summer break. (It’s one of the things that led to our TV-free summer.)

And I look forward to granting my children more freedom as they get older with the smart tips shared in this book.

Thanks for a totally new perspective on free range parenting! The media has certainly only seen and reported negative things. Sounds like an interesting book.

The media has definitely skewed this philosophy, I think you’d be surprised with what the book says. Let me know what you think if you read it!
