Good news: this book is highly entertaining and will make you laugh.
Bad news: I bought six copies of this book for my department at school but it is so inappropriate that I can’t actually give it to kids.
Laughing at My Nightmare by Shane Burcaw is smart, hilarious, and engaging. Burcaw is a twenty one year old man who has a form of muscular dystrophy that has slowly atrophied his muscles. He is completely dependent on his family for all his care, from turning him over in the night to using the restroom. The way he deals with his misfortune is with humor, a positive attitude, and practical jokes.
I want to be Burcaw’s friend. I want him to come to my school and talk to my students. But I can’t have them read his book because it is full of cursing, sexual content, and more dirty language. I’m not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but I can’t in good conscious give this book to middle school kids to read. Even though they would love it. This is definitely an upper-level high school book because of content.
But it is really funny and if you can stomach the language, you should check out Laughing at My Nightmare by Shane Burcaw.
