I’ve read books before that claimed to be similar to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn that have come up short (ahem, Girl on the Train…) so I was hesitant to read another one that touted it was better than Gone Girl. But a few people recommended The Silent Wife by A. S. A. Harrison on Instagram and so I ordered it (a really good price; more on that here).
The good news is it is better than Girl on the Train. It was smarter and easier to get into. It was super creepy to be in the two characters’ minds, listening to their flawed logic and extreme denial.
The story centers on a couple, Jodi and Todd. They’re both completely messed up in their own ways, both damaged because of their pasts and their present choices. But they pretend everything is good so as not to disturb their pretend perfection. Except Todd is a serial cheater and Jodi is completely out of touch with reality which is scary because her job is as a psychologist for other damaged people.
Eventually Todd gets one of his girlfriends pregnant and things go bad, really bad, fast. From the start you know that she will eventually kill him and waiting for it to happen is a slow and delightful game of cat and mouse with a twist–of course–at the end.
I liked this book. It wasn’t stay-up-all-night good but it was entertaining and fun to read. The Silent Wife by A. S. A. Harrison is a good psychological thriller.
