weekend read: Atlantia

Fantasy is normally not my thing, so when I saw that Ally Condie had come out with another young adult novel, the only reason I was interested is because she wrote the Matched series and I really liked that one. But I’m glad I gave it a try because I really enjoyed it.

Atlantia by Ally Condie is about a futuristic time when our world has been divided between the Above city and the Below city. The main character, Rio, lives in the Below with her mother and sister. After her mother’s mysterious death and her sister’s sudden departure to the Above, Rio begins to plan her own escape and as she does, uncovers secrets that could destroy life as she knows it.

Atlantia by Ally Condie

Atlantia by Ally Condie fits best in the dystopian literature category but could easily be labeled as fantasy also. Of course, there’s a love story in the mix but it’s a very minor story line which I like because the story and setting are enough for the reader. Atlantia is a great book that teaches us about what’s truly important and asks us how much we will sacrifice for those we love.

Thank you so much for this great recommendation! I just finished it yesterday, so I’m still on the high of finishing a book you love, but it truly was a great book! I enjoyed that it wasn’t trying to prove itself as a young adult novel by including loads of angst, romance, bad language, etc., but instead she built an engaging story line and interesting secondary world. I didn’t like having to put it down over the 3 days I was reading it.

Yay!! I’m glad you loved it. It was definitely different, wasn’t it! Thanks for letting me know your thoughts–I love it when someone else reads the book and gets to tell me their observations and opinions. Book talk is the best. 🙂
