Bringing Indiana with us

I met with my friend Kristen this week to talk summer road trips. She and her family are leaving in June to do a trip very similar to the one we’re planning for July. So, of course, we met to discuss plans, budgets, and how crazy most people think we are.

I thought I was an organized planner, but I have nothing on Kristen. She knew details about details. I was in awe of her road trip binder (so I started one of my own) and how many things she knew that I hadn’t even begun to think about. I came back from our Starbucks meeting with approximately four million things to do before our trip in July.

No big deal.

While Kristen has maps and routes already planned, my first thought for our trip was What are we going to eat? Because I don’t even know where we’re going exactly, but I do know what we’ll be eating.

I’d say I have my priorities in the right order. Food comes first, always.

And that’s why I was so excited to hear our favorite Indiana State Fair food stop, the Indiana Pork Farmer’s tent, has started selling their DELICIOUS pork patties in local Marsh Supermarkets. Because that means I can stock my camper freezer with pork patties before we leave and then spend our seven-state adventure grilling a little bit of Indiana heaven. I’m very serious when I say I don’t even know what roads we’ll be driving on, but I’ve got our meal plan finished. And many of our dinners include pork patties from Indiana farmers.

Hoosier pride all over the country, folks.

As excited as I am to visit other wonderful states in the US, I am really proud of my Hoosier roots so at least three nights on the road we’ll be eating Indiana Pork Farmer’s pork patties. The simple topping recipe I plan on using is below, and I made it with as many Hoosier shout-outs as possible.

Hoosier Pork Patty topping ingredients:
-fresh salsa
-sweet corn
-green beans
-sharp cheese

Directions: Cook your pork patty on the grill or in a pan (we use an electric skillet for a lot of camp cooking). While it’s cooking, combine salsa and corn kernels. Once your patty is done, cook your green beans (on the grill or in the grill pan where you cooked the pork patty would be my delicious recommendation.) Once the green beans are crispy, top your burger with salsa mixture, fried green beans, and sharp cheese (or whatever cheese you love).

For me, summers in Indiana mean fresh salsa made from veggies grown in my grandma’s garden, sweet corn from the acres that surrounded my parent’s home, and bean fields as far as the eye could see. Granted, most of them were soybean fields and not green beans, so I’m taking a little creative liberty with my memories. The cheese doesn’t have any specific summer connection, but I believe everything is better with cheese and if you don’t, something must be wrong with you.

I can’t wait to hit the open road with my little family and a camper filled with Indiana pork patties. Traveling is fun, but taking a piece of home with you is good too. And it’s even better when you get to eat it. Happy travels, friends!

I’ve never hear of this! Granted, I’ve never been to Indiana. It’s not sausage? Your picture looks quite delicious.

We do pork everything in Indiana; it’s not really sausage, it’s not seasoned like sausage, it’s ground pork like you’d use in a burger. (I’m not sure I’m explaining that correctly…either way, it’s good!) Ha.

Mary, I keep meaning to tell you, we took a very similar trip to the one your are planning a few years ago. I’ll send you a message about some of the places I really enjoyed. You’ll have so much more time than we did that you should have no problem visiting every single one in my honor. I still want to visit Yellowstone and I am pretty annoyed that we didn’t get quite that far, but we were only gone a week. You can skip my sister’s house though, since, well, she’s not your sister.

Johanna, don’t be rude, I’ll stop by your sister’s house, of course. And I’ll make sure to send you some Yellowstone pictures to make up for the travesty of you not seeing it. Send me an email and tell me places to go!
