First off, I would like to apologize for taking a break from David Sedaris. I don’t know what I was thinking. I started reading him when I was nineteen and consumed his writing for years. (“Consumed” is the best way to describe the way I read him.)
So I finally read Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls and fell in love with David Sedaris all over again. If you’ve never had the opportunity to read him, stop what you’re doing right now and go get a book of his essays. They’re just delightful. He’s the writer I want to be when I grow up. He tells such clever, real, hilarious, embarrassing, painful, lovely stories and he can do all of those things in a single paragraph without missing a beat.
So David Sedaris and I are back on. After reading Let’s Explore Diabetese with Owls, I’m going to re-read all his old books because as penance for my way-too-long break. It’s the least I can do.
I love David! My husband & I have seen him read 3 times and have met him to have him sign our books. If you ever get the chance, meet him. You will not regret it. Or forget it. He’s an amazing writer. I haven’t read this book but I have it. Need to get on that.
I’ve seen him read before and it was such a surreal experience! But I didn’t stay and talk or get an autograph–that just sounds too stressful for me. I would just stare at him and being super weird. 🙂
If I haven’t read David Sedaris (which I’m a little embarrassed to admit) where should I start?
Ooooh, I’d start with Me Talk Pretty One Day. I think that’s his first or one of his first, and it’s a good introduction. He gets better with every book, but the early ones are great too.
