weekend read: Love Warrior

Glennon Doyle Melton’s Love Warrior.

Whew.

You know what? I’m not really sure what I think about this book–even now that it’s been weeks since I read it and I’ve had plenty of time to sit with it. Glennon is a good writer; she’s smart and funny and poignant.

All of that is evident when you read her first book, Carry On, Warrior. (my review)

It’s there, in bits and pieces, in her second book too. She’s still smart, even when she’s in her own head too much. She’s funny, even when this book doesn’t have much fun or funny in it. She’s poignant in the midst of hard things to write (and read).

But I’m just not sure about all of it together, all the parts she included in Love Warrior and where she ends up. I felt this book was much less Jesus follower and a lot more worldview-friendly. I realize that as she gains popularity, unfortunately that tends to happen. I also know that she writes about truth and I saw glimpses of that in this book.

I don’t think I can say I enjoyed reading Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton because so much of it is not for enjoyment. It’s a hard book to read. I do admire that she can sit in her mess, poke at it from a million different angles, and slowly take lessons from it as opposed to run from it like so many of us do.

This book will stretch and challenge you, it will break your heart and make you hopeful. I encourage you to read it and then engage with others about it. There is good stuff here and she’s a wonderful writer–but I think taking every single word she writes (and says on the internet) as a universal truth for all of us needs to be done very carefully.

Have you read this one? What did you think?

This is my Feb book club read so I’m about to get into it. I didn’t read Carry On, Warrior so I don’t have previous experience with the author but I’m looking forward to checking it out. Although I cry easily and from what I gather I’ll be doing that a lot which I don’t necessarily love lol!

It’s definitely an emotional read. You’ll have to let me know what you think when you’re done. 🙂

A beautiful and emotional memoir, threaded with truth and grit. Hard to put down and so deeply moving. Highly recommended to everyone!
