weekend read: The Middle Place

I’ve had The Middle Place on my reading list for a while. The memoir is written by Kelly Corrigan and tells the story of Corrigan as she is diagnosed with breast cancer while still trying to raise her babies and build a life with her husband. Soon after her diagnosis, her beloved father has his own cancer diagnosis and Corrigan is literally stuck in the middle or trying to care for her family, herself, and her father.

I loved this book. Corrigan writes about her father and growing up as Bill Corrigan’s daughter in a reverent, beautiful way. She weaves stories of her present health and struggles while seamlessly flashing back to her magical childhood and her bigger-than-life father.

I don’t think you can read this book and not wish, just a little, that Bill Corrigan was your father too. You root for him and his health. You root also, for Corrigan herself, for her recovery and her young family. The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan is a wonderful story. It leaves you hopeful and encouraged, even in the face of such horrible odds.
