I came across You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson while we were in New York City last fall. I love visiting independent bookstores in places we visit and try to buy at least one book every place we visit. Since I’m on a budget, I often can’t buy every book I find so I end up taking pictures of them with my phone and then adding them to my to-read list when I have a minute.
I ended up getting You Can’t Touch My Hair for Christmas. I love Robinson’s no-nonsense style of writing and truth-telling. She’s funny, smart, and thoughtful. Her recall of pop culture events from her childhood is shockingly accurate. I seriously can’t understand how she remembers that much about her youth.
Beside the humor, You Can’t Touch My Hair is also thought-provoking and socially conscious. Robinson makes good points about living as a black woman in America, women’s issues, and struggles to still have the same rights as other sexes and races. I enjoyed reading this book even if some of her views differ from my own. But hearing from someone whose life experiences are different than mine is always helpful and important so I’m going to keep reading books that push me and make me think. I highly recommend you do the same thing and You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson is a great place to start.
