I guess we’re never really ready

Today is my last day of summer break. I would like to call for a moment of silence.

Thank you.

This was the shortest summer break ever. Five and a half weeks was just not enough time to get everything done. I didn’t even get to take a nap! Not once!

This summer brought unexpected heartache and loss, things I would have never imagined. This summer brought opportunities and big dreams into realities. This summer has been one of extremes. And while the thought of another school year is no longer just in the future, I wonder if I’m ready. Ready to face a building and a school year without my friend Joe. Ready to take on a huge writing project while working full time. Ready to send my first baby to kindergarten. Ready to wake up at 5:30 AM again.

If this summer has taught me anything, it’s that you are never really ready. Good or bad, life is happening all around and you just do your best to handle it when it comes.

So let’s do this school year. *fist bump*

how to avoid awkward situations while teaching

It’s happened to most teachers: you’re using the world wide web to show your students some real-world learning, maybe you’re modeling a search engine, exploring a website as a class, or using YouTube to show an educational video, when off to the side, an advertisement for something inappropriate comes up. Lindsey Lohan shows the world how to hit rock bottom or Lose 15 pounds by Friday! with a picture of a scantily-clad women dancing around.

bing in the classroom 1

It’s when you least expect it that your class points out what everyone has been whispering about for the past minute. And then you rush to close out the browser or turn the projector off. Your class has never seen you move so fast (except for that time the kid started puking right near you and then you moved to the hallway faster than all the other kids…suckers). Ahh, the internet. A place where so much learning can take place, but also a place where there’s so much nonsense.

In an attempt to avoid those awkward situations, Bing has created Bing in the Classroom. An online resource for schools that helps students have a safe search engine, free from ads and adult material with an added level of privacy. So searching “women’s roles in World War II” (a topic some of my students are researching right now) wouldn’t automatically bring up ads generated by those search terms. And that’s really important to me as a teacher. Nothing is more frustrating than the distractions that come with having students search for something online. And taking away the ads while they search is always a step in the right direction.

So now teachers and students have a web-search program that will cut down on distractions and unnecessary or inappropriate advertisements: Bing in the Classroom.

And because Bing knows how powerful technology can be in a classroom, they’ve got this great Bing Rewards program that helps you earn Microsoft Surface tablets for schools. Just sign up with the school of your choice as a recipient and every time you search, you’ll earn points for your school! It’s like you’re giving back every time you search movie times or how to boil an egg (don’t pretend like you haven’t done that before…).

We’re all friends here, right?

So I can share about poop and no one will completely die? Because I’m going to. Turn away now if this is something you can’t handle. I shared some dressy pictures today and that can be enough for some of you. I promise, it’s going to get weird so it’s best you just go now.

Okay, good, it’s only the weirdos left. My kind of people, really. Today I’m going to share a gross story and some people won’t be able to handle it.

First up: teachers don’t get paid enough money. You’ve heard people say that before, right? We have to be parents, counselors, disciplinarians, nurses, mentors, coaches, entertainers, secretaries, receptionists, as well as a bunch of other jobs I didn’t learn about in college. Oh, and teach. I have to teach, too.

Because I chose to teach, I’ve lost range of motion in my right thumb from breaking up a fight. I sleep-yell at my husband about being in the wrong seat and not taking his test correctly in the middle of the night. But the worst thing that I’ve ever experienced was a few weeks ago during my lunch break. As I was exiting the bathroom, one of my students busted through the door with her hand over her mouth, throwing up. I immediately got hit with throw up and as I was trying to hold the door for her to come in (and screaming “get to the toilet!“), she rushed past me with what I thought was throw up coming out the back of her shorts.

Oh, you see where this is going?

Because I didn’t.

I was so shocked at getting throw up on me that my mind didn’t register that what was coming out of her pants and sliding down her legs AND SPLASHING ON ME wasn’t throw up. It wasn’t until I had left the bathroom and was trying to tell the nurse what happened that my brain caught up with the images and I realized she was shitting her pants and I had shit on me and I was going to die.

Teachers don’t get paid enough.

And have a great Friday.

everybody’s working for the weekend.

I’m starting my fourth week of school today. It’s no longer back-to-school time for me, it’s just the plain ole school year.

The thrill of new school supplies and new outfits is gone. My students are showing more of themselves and less of the pretend-to-be-good first weeks. I’m finally getting used to the 5:15 AM alarm clock (just kidding, that’s never going to happen).

It was very fall-like for a few weeks here and I got all cozy thinking about hot chocolate and bonfires, scarves and boots. But this week is supposed to be hot and sunny and I’m ready for that again too.

My goal for the week is to be at the pool by 3:15 at least one day after school. Just me, a book, and a few cute pool boys.

I’m penciling it in right now…

P.S. That necklace above? It gave off a quiet clanging sound every time I walked. Sort of like a cow bell. Not sure how often I’ll be wearing that one. It kind of messed with my head all day.

all the random bits.

(dress: Old Navy, necklace: Forever 21, sandals: Target)

I have lots of things floating around in my head right now and I can’ t get enough clarity on any of them to turn it into a whole post so you get all the random bits today. Sorry. You’re welcome.

-Anyone else thrive on being busy? The more things I have to do, the more things I can get done, the more focused I am, and the more I feel like I can accomplish. And it’s not due to procrastination, that’s really not my thing. I just thrive on being busy. I do a better job when I feel a little pressure and stress. I just work well under pressure. It’s something I’ve known about myself since high school. And why I originally majored in journalism in college. Pressure makes me more creative and write better. Anyone else feel the same way?

-You guys saw that my favorite grocery store extended their summer fuel points program again, right? Make sure you download Kroger’s new digital coupon for August and keep earning double fuel points on the weekends for all your last-minute summer travels or, if you must, for driving back and forth to work (boo.)

-Whenever my husband chews gum I fantasize about ways to kill harm him.

-You’re aware that I know cool people, right? Well, my cool friend Jessi does a podcast with Chick McGee (called Off the Air) from the Bob and Tom Show and she mentioned this little ol’ blog on a recent episode. I got a frantic text last week from a co-worker that said her husband listens to the podcast and that she mentioned me. Her husband was pretty impressed with my level of cool. And so now I think you should listen to the podcast (if you don’t already) so you can be impressed also. Plus, my friend Jess is funny and you’ll really like the podcast. Do it or else. Thanks. Love, The Cracker.

-It’s embarrassing how excited I am to be getting showered and dressed every day now that school has started. No really, really embarrassing.

-Only four more months until Downton Abbey returns.

That’s it. Told you it was random. Anything you need to share today?

dog and pony show. minus the pony and add a kid.

(pants: Old Navy, shirt: Kohls, heels: Target, bracelet: Forever 21)

I found my mojo last week.

Of course, it happened to be in the middle of the first week back to school and new students and papers to grade and tons of copies to make.

All summer my desire to read devour books has been gone. I read during summer break, don’t get me wrong, but I normally consume books over my two-month break. But this summer I couldn’t get into anything. I didn’t stay up all night reading or sit on the floor next to my kids and “pretend” to play with them while really focusing on my book. I didn’t spend any time sitting by the pool with my next-favorite book.

It kind of bummed me out.

I love to get wrapped up in a book. I love the consuming nature of a good book that I can’t put down. I thrive on that shit.

And then it happened, out of no where, I couldn’t stop reading.

So now I’m in the middle of busy August where there’s too much to do and not enough time and I’m staying up until 1:30 AM reading books, completely ignoring the fact that soon (5:10 AM, to be exact) my alarm will sound and I’ll have to be up teaching and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow.

And all I want to do is read.

Seriously, has no one created a job yet where I can just stay in bed all day and read? That’s dumb. Someone get on that. Now.

And now a real life moment: This is what all my pictures look like before I edit them. Mom life at it’s best. Also, can everyone just LEAVE ME ALONE FOR A MINUTE??!

welcome back, NPR

(skirt: Old Navy [old], t-shirt: Old Navy kids, scarf: Kohls, sandals: Target)
I’ve mentioned before how I only listen to NPR on my way to and from school. I don’t listen to it on the weekends, on vacation, or during the summer.
It’s some unspoken rule that NPR is for work and only work.
So this morning, I’m listening to NPR again. Catching up on news, current events, and a little liberal commentary.
Because today, the kids return to my classroom and I am, once again, a teacher.
Lord help us.

did and did not.

(skinnies: Target, blouse: TJ Maxx, sandals: Target, necklace: Forever 21, those kids: I made those)

This is it.

My last day of summer break.

What I did: attended weddings like it was my job. Well, one of them kind of was and it was exhausting and fun at the same time. Lost ten pounds. Started calling myself a runner. Finished redoing Elliott’s room. Mowed the grass once. Lots of sun and swimming. Read good books. A little bit of laundry. Laughed a lot. Avoided blogging. Washed my hair approximately seven times. Camped.

What I didn’t do: potty train Harper. Redo Harper’s room. Clean my house. Take many naps. Write letters. Lose 20 pounds. Sleep in. Find a new job. Pay off one of my student loans. Visit my grandparents. Plant things. Grow pretty flowers. Stop procrastinating. Write the next great American novel. Sleep.

Until next year, summer.

unavoidable

(skinnies: Old Navy Rockstars, shirt: Old Navy, scarf: Kohls, purse: Kohls, sandals: Target, bracelets: Target)
On a recent date night, we happened across this beautiful lobby where all 80’s pornos were shot and we couldn’t let it go without a few pictures.
The lighting is bad, the photos are blurry, but the magic in that gold and black is unavoidable.
Also unavoidable?
My return to school this week. Officially, I have to be back at school on Thursday, but I’ll be working all week on my room and getting ready for those blessed kids to come back one week from today.
Too soon, huh?
I feel the exact same way.
