We talk often about our blessings in this house. We want our children to grow up knowing how well we are taken care of, how much we have, and to be mindful of those that don’t have what we do.
That’s why The Blessings Jar by Colleen Coble was such a hit at our house. The story (about a girl named Punky!) starts out with a grumpy little girl who is down because her friend can’t come over to play. Her grandma cheers her up by encouraging her to look for all the good things around her, all her blessings, even though she’s disappointed. Her grandma gives her a jar to hold mementos from all her blessings and Punky spends the day collecting things that reminder her of all the ways God is taking care of her, making her feel loved, and providing for her.
I love that Punky and her grandma celebrate things like her pet dog, jumping into leaves, and dancing. All things my four year old loves to do and can relate to so well.
Collen Coble must be a pretty busy lady since she writes adult books and young adult novels in addition to children’s books. I had the pleasure of reading her newest YA novel, Rock Harbor: Search and Rescue and it’s just as good as this children’s book. That lady has talent.
I’m thinking sometime this week, we’ll try out the blessing jar at our house, gathering things that we’ve thankful for and then using them with Ellie and Harper’s before-bedtime prayers. It will be a good visual of how well our God takes care of us.
Are you a parent or a grandparent that would love to share this book with your littles? Want a copy for yourself? Well, you’re in luck! Comment below, telling me one blessing you’re thankful for and use Rafflecopter to log your entry. You can earn other chances too! And because every kid needs something to carry around his or her blessings in, you can also win the Thirty One Gifts zipper pouch. Because if your kid is anything like mine, a bag to carry all her treasures in is always a hit. (And while you’re waiting to see if you’ve won, check out the flipbook or print off some coloring pages for your little ones, those were a big hit with my girls.)
