weekend read: A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty

Family secrets.

Every family has them. I know some juicy ones myself. So when I stumbled upon A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson, I knew I needed to read it.

Three generations of Slocumb women are at the center of this story; every fifteen years, tragedy strikes and this time when it comes, it looks like it’s going to destroy everything and everyone. So Ginny, the matriarch, works hard to keep the truth–that she doesn’t fully understand–hidden. Mosey, at fifteen years old, is working just as hard to uncover it, and her mom, Liza, is trying to find the words to help, still learning how to live after a debilitating stroke at thirty.

I loved this book for a number of reasons, but one is because it kept me guessing. These Slocumb women are multi-fauceted and layered and it takes a while for the reader to get to all the parts you needed so you could see the whole picture. I thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue, really. This book is good. And it makes you look at the women that came before you differently as well. About the choices people made before us, about their reasons and their lives.

A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty would be a great fall read, perfect to read while snuggled up with a blanket and hot cider, something to keep you up all night and guessing.
