weekend read: Almost Moon

This book is creepy and engaging. If you love a dark, twisted story then Almost Moon by Alice Sebold is your next read. (If Gillian Flynn or Elizabeth Brundage are enjoyable to you, this is next.)

Helen Knightly has just suffocated her aging mother. She didn’t plan it, didn’t think it through, she just did and now she’s got to figure out what comes next. Jail? Run? Kill herself?

Almost Moon by Alice Sebold

Almost Moon jumps in fast and doesn’t stop. Helen’s mom is dead within the first few chapters and as she processes what she’s done, we learn about her past, her parents, and how she got here. Growing up with a depressed father and a agoraphobic, controlling mother has left Helen broken and scarred. She’s divorced, only talking to one of her two daughters, and emotionally unavailable. But she loves her mom and she’s still not really sure what happened.

Almost Moon by Alice Sebold follows Helen through a twenty-four hour period, the evening and next day after she murders her mom, and tosses the reader around, flashing back and forth as we learn about her warped world. This story is dark and, at times, hard to read. It’s twisted and painful, but I couldn’t put it down.
