weekend read: Dirty Little Secret

If you get sucked into TV shows like Hoarders or Buried Alive like I do, then this book is for you.

Dirty Little Secrets by C. J. Omololu is a young adult book about sixteen-year-old Lucy and her hoarder mother.  Lucy has spent her life making sure the insides of her house are not seen by anyone.  It limits her social life, her relationship with her mother and siblings, and has come between her and a normal life.  Lucy’s mom has a sickness that she can’t see past.

And when tragedy strikes one night while Lucy is away, she goes to extreme measures to make sure the life they’ve been leading stays a secret.

Throw in the boy of her dreams that is finally paying attention to her, an older sister who has picked up the same habits the mom has, and a distant brother that ran the minute he graduated high school and the chaos that Lucy has lived with for too long starts to take its toll.

Dirty Little Secrets is a fun and sad look at what it’s like to live in a house you can barely walk through.  It’s kind of like a bad car crash, you feel horrible for the people, but you can’t stop staring.  And the end, how Lucy decides to clean up this mess of her life is brave and shocking.
