weekend read: Girl, Stolen

I can’t imagine having my sight one day and the next day it’s gone.  Oh, and losing my mom at the same time.

But that’s Cheyenne’s life in Girl, Stolen by April Henry.

It’s been a few years since the accident and things are finally starting to feel comfortable for Cheyenne.  It’s a new comfortable, being blind and not having your mom around, but her dad has remarried and her blindness is the new normal.
But then Cheyenne’s stepmom’s SUV is stolen while Cheyenne is in it.  At first the thief, Griffin, thinks stealing a car with a blind girl can’t be that bad, just drop her off somewhere and be done with her.  It’s not like she can identify him.

But Griffin heads home first to drop the car off with his dad.  While at home, Griffin and his dad happen to catch the news about a girl being kidnapped.  And they learn who Cheyenne’s father is.

And that changes things drastically.

Girl, Stolen switches points of view each chapter, alternating between Cheyenne and Griffin.  The reader gets to know both characters and, in my case, likes both of them.  Griffin isn’t what he seems and his background has set him up for a hard life.  Cheyenne is smart, resourceful, and determined.  Through the chaotic events that follow the news story, Cheyenne and Griffin spend a lot of time together and form this odd bond that, at times, looks like the start of romance.

This book is a good young adult book for both guys and girls.  The switching points of view make it an overall interesting read and definitely something reluctant readers would like.  There are a couple twists and turns at the end and I think young adult readers will like the power these kids ultimately have in changing their lives.
