weekend read: Hollow City

I finally got my hands on the second novel in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series, Hollow City by Ransom Riggs. If you haven’t read the first book, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, I highly recommend it.

The second book started out much the same way the first one did, a little slow and I felt like I had to learn to love the characters all over again. Maybe because there was a month break between the books, but once I got back into it, I couldn’t stop.

Hollow City

Jacob and his new friends are on the hunt for other ymbrynes since Miss Peregrine is stuck in bird form. This one is full of loops, history, and great old pictures just like the first one. The mix of story and illustrations really carry the story. I love waiting for the next spooky photograph to add to the drama and the sense of history when you look at all of them is just perfect for the story.

Hollow City would be a good companion novel to read while kids are learning about World War II. This second book is especially rich with European WWII references. And in a magical world where teachers get to create their own curriculum, this book could be the focal point of a pretty amazing unit. But I digress, that’s just fantasy. And so is this book, beautifully written, historical fantasy. And I can’t wait for the next one.

What about you? Have you read the first one yet? Or this one? Tell me what you think! What about Jacob at the end??
