weekend read: Insurgent

Today’s my birthday and that’s all good, but in JUST THREE DAYS, the final Divergent book (Allegiant) by Veronica Roth comes out and I’m probably more excited for that date than anything else.

And our seven-year wedding anniversary is Sunday, that’s how focused I am on this series.

If you missed all my gushing and rambling about it, you can check it out here. Right after I read the first book, I dove into the second, Insurgent, and read it non-stop for two days.

It was kind of like drinking a lot on a Saturday night with your friends. It’s good in the moment, but afterwards, you’re not so sure you’d do it again. And by that, I mean I consumed Insurgent and when I was done, I was so bummed I’d have to wait months before the final one that I wished I had savored it and stretched it out for as long as possible. (Acknowledging the weird drunk-Saturday-night-and-book analogy and then moving on…)

But I’ve never been good at restraint or moderation (also see: eating, shopping, etc.) and the book was done before I even noticed.

So if you’ve been waiting to see what Tris and Four and all the other characters you love so much have been up to since Divergent, you should spend this weekend working on Insurgent because the third and final book comes out on Tuesday and you’ll need to be ready for it. I absolutely love that the second book picks up right where Divergent left off, there’s no passage of time and the reader feels like you haven’t missed a moment of the action. That left-out feeling is the worst and I hate when authors have to flashback so much in the beginning of a sequel. Roth doesn’t allow time to pass and I love her for it.

Like I said when I reviewed Divergent, there’s lots of young adult dystopian novels out there and many of them are not that great. But the Divergent series is not like the rest, it can hold its own again other dystopian novels and, in most instances, come out ahead.

My best year was when I was 31. That was when we adopted our son.
