weekend read: My Life Next Door

A cheesy beach read for young adults; it was calling to me, as you probably already know. I’m such a sucker for a young-love story and My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick was perfect for relaxing over Christmas break.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

The book centers on Samantha, a well-to-do daughter of a state senator. She’s grown up next door to the black sheep of the neighborhood, a family of too many kids and not enough structure. So it is only natural that when Samantha’s mom isn’t paying attention, Sam falls in love with one of their sons, Jase.

As the summer progresses, their relationship gets more and more serious. And just when Samantha couldn’t be happier the unthinkable happens and she has to choose between her family and Jase, between right and wrong.

There is nothing groundbreaking in this book and it’s predictable in some ways, but it was fun to read. There was a lot of focus on teen sex and I wasn’t a big fan of how much the book built it up and made it seem cool (it’s not, kids), but otherwise, I enjoyed the book and liked staying up late into the night reading it.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick is fluffy and romantic, easy and fun, definitely a good book to read when you need a break from heavier stuff. Or if you just like YA romance, there’s no shame in that.
