weekend read: Savvy

I’m going to go ahead and say it: I’m not a big fan of “magical” books.  For me, make believe things (vampires, zombies, etc.) and super powers do not make a great book so I was hesitant to read Savvy by Ingrid Law.  I’d also heard from a couple teacher friends that they liked it.  And I’ve had some students enjoy it (and the rest of the series).  So I bought it at a late spring book fair and just got around to reading it.

Savvy(novel).jpegThe Beaumont family has secrets.  For generations, on each member’s thirteenth birthday, they learn their savvy, their supernatural power that sets them apart from everyone else.  Then the kids are taken out of school and home schooled until they can control their power (being able to control your power is called scumble; example: I know how to scumble being perfect all the time.).
Being perfect all the time is the savvy of one of the characters.  Another can capture radio waves in mason jars and then replay them by opening the jars anytime she wants.  One family member can produce enough electricity to blow all the light bulbs in a hospital.  Savvies are mostly used for good, but understanding your savvy is hard.
As the main character Mibs nears her thirteenth birthday, things get thrown off course when her father is involved in a terrible car accident.  As she takes off on an adventure to get to her dad in time (she thinks she can save him), she makes some unlikely friends, puts some people in danger, and learns more about herself than she bargained for.

Savvy is a good sci-fi read for middle level readers.  I can see using this book as a possible read-aloud this year.  But I’m not sure I care to read the next book for myself.  It just didn’t capture my attention like some YA books do.  I think this will be a popular read for my 7th graders and I might end up reading the next book, Scumble, because of them, but I’m in no hurry to do it right now.
