weekend read: Slaying the Debt Dragon

There’s just something about reading about other people’s finances, budgets, and debt-elimination plans that gets me going. I don’t know if it’s because money is something that many people don’t like to talk about or what, but I love hearing other’s money stories. I find them encouraging and I always learn something new.

Slaying the Debt Dragon by Cherie Lowe

So when I read Slaying the Debt Dragon by Cherie Lowe and heard her family’s story of getting rid of over $127,000 in debt, I was geeked the whole time. Lowe shares her mess, her faith, and her God-honoring plan that helped get her family from overwhelming debt to debt free. She’s upfront about this journey being hard, really hard, but something that can be done. And Lowe’s book is full of ideas and tips that help you get there. She’s encouraging, real, and funny, all things I appreciate in a writer.

As we prepare to start 2015, it’s easy to think about fresh starts and big goals. Why not decide to get a handle on your finances in 2015 also? Slaying the Debt Dragon by Cherie Lowe would be a great first step.

Bonus! I’m giving away a copy of Slaying the Debt Dragon because I loved it so much and I just know you will too. Comment below with one finance-related goal you have for 2015 and I’ll announce the winner next week. Good luck!

We have fully committed to tithing. We stopped in 2014 to try to put that money towards bills.. it didn’t work out so great for us. Our goals include paying off at LEAST one bill without bringing on any additional debt in 2015!

I’m going to ask myself before every purchase if this is something I really need or something that will just eventually be “stuff” that clogs up my house.

My goal is to build a savings account and stop using credit cards as our back up plan. Plus paying off as many credit cards as possible!

We’ve eliminated most debt (have done it several times) . We just don’t do well with the money we have…it disappears! We tithe, but something is amiss in management. Praying for “growth” (pun intended) in the area of finances.

My husband and i owe over 100k each for student loans for our advanced degrees. Some of those are in forbearance. We are not even paying the minimum! My goal for 2015 is to take our heads out of the sand, and start paying towards every loan!

We all have debt – college, car, mortgage, credit card, etc….I want to give more to overseas missionaries and children I sponsor in China. Living on disability used to have me pause when giving, however I know He has me in His hands and struggles are imminent but not impossible.

Having enough savings I can move a portion to a CD but keep some on hand in case of an emergency.

Cherie is my inspiration. I pledge to separate the “want” from “need”. Like Cherie, I don’t have fabulous clothes or a super duper car to show for my debt- but using the snowball method, tithing the best I can and want/need plan, I will sooooome day tell my Fannie Mac to hit the road!!

We will continue to work on whittling our debt in 2015. Small vacations will be paid in cash and learning to be content. Thanks for the chance.

One of my goals is to plan ahead and stock up for the year – and purchase items we need when they are on sale AND when I have coupons – we have the space to store them, and I have a pretty good idea how much we go through in a year – and then I won’t need to buy more shampoo/toilet paper/toothpaste/mouthwash/paper towels/etc…..for the year. This will save me money on stuff I need, AND keep me out of the stores – I don’t need the temptation, so the fewer trips I have to make per year, the better.

    2. Sell home and move to a bigger one

We need an emergency fund!! We use our credit cards for emergencies. ๐Ÿ™ Also I’m ready to PURGE. We have too much stuff. I’m ready to go through each room in our house & get rid of half of what we own. Hope to sell a lot of it to fund that emergency account!

I would love to stop paying all the late fees! If we could just get on top of it and pay on time, the balance would go down quicker.
