I found the perfect Christmas gift for your history buff, Americana lover, or that someone who has a smart, slightly cheesy sense of humor.
And that about covers everyone I know, so I’ll be buying a few of these to hand out next month.
Stars and Swipes: 30 Postcards of Awkward Americana and Hugs and Misses: 30 Postcards of Awkward Romance
(both by Wilhelm Staehle) are postcard collections of beautiful artwork filled with satire and sarcasm, two of my favorite things.
Stars and Swipes is full of well-known historical references but with new, funny twists. The postcards are meant to be torn out and mailed, but I feel the need to horde them all, showing them off to friends but not actually mailing them. I was also the kid that stockpiled Lisa Frank stickers but never used them, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise to people that know me.
Hugs and Misses is my favorite of the two, just because there is nothing funnier than love. I want to hang at least ten of these of my refrigerator so that I can show them to visitors when they come to my house. Some of them are corny, but even a corny joke makes me smile.
I had a hard time picking examples to show, there are just so many clever ones. Each book comes with 30 postcards, more than enough to mail to friends while still keeping the best ones for yourself (not that I would ever do that…). Someone on your Christmas list needs these books, so make sure you grab them in time to share the awkwardness.
