I feel like I’m beating a dead horse here, but dang it, I love young adult literature. Make it YA literature that is slightly dystopian with a fun love story and I am a goner.
So The Selection by Kiera Cass was basically made for me. When my friend Ashley introduced me to this book, only the first two were out. So I had to wait long, agonizing months for the last one to be released. Seriously, I can’t stand the wait for another book in a series. It drives me batty. Maybe it would help if I didn’t binge-read most books and paced myself like a normal person, but I haven’t figure out how to do that yet.
The Selection : who wouldn’t love a chance to be a fairy tale princess and leave your life of poverty and struggle? While America is hesitant to be in the Selection, she eventually comes to have feelings for Prince Maxon even though she left her first love, Aspen, at home when she came to live at the palace. As America competes for Maxon’s love, other girls from the kingdom give her problems. This book is like a toned-down version of The Bachelor, but thankfully less trashy and more classy. I’ve been sharing this series with my middle school readers since it came out and the lack of sex is refreshing. This book is just a fun, innocent fantasy that young girls (and me…) love to read.
There are three books in this series: The Selection, The Elite, and The One. I bought The One the day it came out and stayed up that night to read the whole thing. Finally, there is going to be a winner and I had to know how it all played out. The last half of the last book is so action-packed that you feel worn out afterwards. And you want more.
Which makes me so happy to hear that Cass is writing a fourth book, The Heir, that is set to come out May 5th. Seriously, I’ve been tracking down past students who loved this series to tell them the good news. I’m already planning my May 5th weekend around reading this book.
The Selection by Kiera Cass would be a great gift for your middle level girl reader or for the high school girl that can’t get enough of reality dating shows. I loved reading this series, I still love recommending it to my students, and I can’t wait for the next book to come out.
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.
I didn’t know a fifth one was coming out. Thanks for sharing the great news.
You’re welcome! 🙂
Did you know there are also three prequel novellas by Kiera Cass?
The Prince – another girl in Prince Maxon’s life (released after book 1)
The Guard – America & Aspen (released after book 2)
The Queen – Prince Maxon’s mother, Amberly (released after book 3)
I had no idea! *gasp* I’m going to get them–thanks for sharing! 🙂
