weekend read: The Woman in Cabin 10

I’ve become weary of “the book” everyone says is amazing and we should all be reading. More times than not, I’m let down and left wondering if people just need to read more books then they wouldn’t be so quick to call a book amazing. They’d have a better sense of what’s good and what’s just okay. (Like The Girl on the Train–a horrible book that too many people loved.)

So when I heard about The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware, I was skeptical. I requested it from the library and was twenty two in line so I figured I had some time.

When it arrived a week later, I was confused but picked it up quickly before they realized their mistake.

The Woman in Cabin 10

I had a hard time getting into it–I felt the narrator was a drunk and annoying. I grew tired of her inner turmoil and had no sympathy for her even as she’s struggling to recover from a break-in and a somewhat hazy recollection of seeing a woman thrown overboard from a luxury cruise ship she’s on for her work as a travel writer.

I will say the twist at the end was better than The Girl on a Train but not as shocking as I was hoping for.  The book starts with some great suspense that sets the reader up well, but the rest of the book lacks the same energy or thrill.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware is okay. It won’t be the best thing you’ve read this year but it won’t be the worst either. (But if you’re looking for some great, twisty fiction, go with the queen, Agatha Christie. Everything else just seems like a step down.)

Oh no! I just finished Belgravia, which was wonderful, and started The Girl on the Train. It’s horrible thus far. I’m not sure I can devote any more time to it. Too many good books to read.
